Acanthus3 The Beauty of Recycling

Anne Thompson of Acanthus, one of my favorite shops in Portland, is what I would call a Master of Recycling.  Every day Anne gives new life to beautiful pieces of old furniture.

LoungeLizardSofa The Beauty of Recycling

I love this Lounge Lizard Sofa,  upholstered in 100% recycled poly.  It is even more stunning with the reclaimed wood wall in the Acanthus showroom as the backdrop.

The Acanthus fabric showroom has hundreds of fabric options that are suitable for both residential and commercial interiors and all the fabrics they offer have an environmental story.  The textile collection includes: Organic cotton, Wool, Linen, Hemp, Recycled polyester, Cork, Silk, Eco-intelligent® polyester, Mohair and PVC-free faux leather.

From the fabric, to the frame, Acanthus is committed to using socially and environmentally responsible materials in their workroom. In addition to their collection of eco-friendly upholstery fabrics, they use the following materials: natural latex cushion cores, kapok, wool, organic cotton, and feather/down pillow form, organic cotton and wool batting, organic cotton cushion casings, recycled steel springs.

As I have shopped for furniture for my own home I have often been disappointed by the options for new furniture, not to mention most of the choices out there are doused in chemicals!

50sBoudoirChair The Beauty of Recycling

This 50’s Boudoir Chair is upholstered in hybrid (rayon/recycled poly/poly).  Look at the lines of this, the real deal!  Imagine this against a NOURISH .05 wall in your boudoir – LUSCIOUS!

1920s chairandottoman The Beauty of Recycling

This 1920’s chair and ottoman was given new life with a whimsical screenprinted linen.

The old furniture you find at house sales, on the street and in your family’s basement are in most cases a much better place to start than buying new furniture.  Usually older pieces have a lot more character, are better quality, and you have so many more choices for eco- friendly fabric!

yellowchair The Beauty of Recycling

We found this gem on the streets of NYC and it has been in our studio for years.  I have recovered it in my mind over and over again.  This blog post about Anne is motivating me to finally take it in and get it recovered for a new life in the living room!  I will post the before and after in an upcoming blog.
